Man Utd outcast ‘in a good place’ despite uncertainty over future

Man Utd interim boss Darren Fletcher says that Kobbie Mainoo is “in a good place” despite the uncertainty that has been hanging over his future at the club.

The 20-year-old has struggled for game time this season after falling out with former head coach Ruben Amorim, who was sacked from his position this week.

The midfielder returned to the matchday squad this week, coming off the bench in the second half of Wednesday’s 2-2 with Burnley at Turf Moor after recovering from a calf issue.

Mainoo has not started a single game in the Premier League after he requested to go out on loan at the start of the season, but he may be afforded more minutes at Man Utd as the club search for a new manager.

“He seems in a good place – Kobbie doesn’t give you much, so you wouldn’t know if he was in a good place or not so good,” Fletcher said with a laugh. “He’s like that. That’s his natural way.

“But I know him well and I’ve known him for a long time. I’ve seen him around throughout the season and I’ve had conversations with him in general, but he’s in a good place.

“I know Kobbie and I think he knows me and he knows (interim first-team coach) Travis Binnion, so he’s comfortable with his environment, he’s in a good place, he’s trained well.”

Fletcher could hand Mainoo his first start Man Utd since the League Cup defeat to Grimsby Town in August when the Red Devils host Brighton in the FA Cup this Sunday.
