Manchester United have reportedly identified James Trafford as a potential candidate to replace Andre Onana between the sticks starting next season.
The Cameroonian has been enduring another torrid campaign at Old Trafford filled with costly blunders. With his old ally Erik ten Hag out of the door, the 28-year-old might be running on borrowed time, even though Ruben Amorim continues to consider him the club’s ultimate first choice. After all, the Red Devils’ management and supporters have already lost their patience with the former Ajax man.
The goalkeeper’s howlers have only served to attract more criticism and negativity around the club. As former Italian custodian Antonio Fontana vividly argued, Onana is also unpopular amongst his teammates as he often seeks attention towards himself with his overly-dramatic saves that are aimed to appease the cameras.
Therefore, all signs point towards a change of the guard between the posts in the summer. According to CaughtOffside, United have identified 22-year-old Trafford as a possible solution for this role.

The young shot-stopper started his career at Manchester City but eventually had to leave in the quest of finding himself a prominent role, as he was unlikely to gain playing time in the presence of Ederson.
In the summer of 2023, he joined Burnley on a transfer worth around £15 million, and has now cemented himself as one of the best rising goalkeepers in the nation. In fact, he has already been called up for England’s first team, but has yet to make his debut for the Three Lions.
This season, Trafford has made 34 appearances in the Championship, and only conceded 10 goals in the process, while registering a whopping 24 clean sheets. He was chosen as the league’s Player of the Month following what was described as a ‘perfect’ January.
The same source also confirms what has been recently reported about Man Utd’s interest in RB Leipzig bomber Benjamin Sesko, while noting that the club can raise funds by offloading the likes of Antony and Marcus Rashford who left the club on loan in January.
