It would seem that during next summer’s transfer window, Manchester City will need to strengthen their midfield. There are doubts that surround the future of Bernardo Silva. Manchester City’s captain is about to enter the final six months of his current contract and he could leave the club at the end of this season. Mateo Kovacic has seen his 25/26 season scuppered by injury. Rodri continues to battle his way back to full fitness. Based on all of this information, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see City move for a midfielder next summer.
One player who could slot into Manchester City’s midfield and contribute strongly is Nottingham Forest midfielder and England international Elliot Anderson. Anderson has already been linked with a move to the Etihad and now a new report suggests that Manchester City are in pole position to sign Elliot Anderson.
Mark Brus has reported via his exclusive Daily Briefing column (subscription required) that Manchester City are currently considered the favourites to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. Furthermore, Brus reports that City could face competition from Manchester United to sign the England international. Despite Manchester United’s interest in signing Anderson, Brus reports that City are determined to do whatever it takes to sign Elliot Anderson ahead of any competition.

It does seem to be a matter of time before Elliot Anderson leaves Nottingham Forest. The England international appears destined to sign for a big club in the future. Anderson has become one of the elite midfielders in the Premier League this season. He has also become an integral component of England’s midfield. His game has gone from strength to strength and watching Anderson play, he looks to be ready-made to slot into the City midfield.
Elliot Anderson shines in possession. In terms of progressive passes, the England international is always looking to drive Nottingham Forest up the pitch with his passing. On occasions, he does give the ball away given the nature of the passes that he plays but that isn’t a major concern. Anderson’s ability to attempt to split open, and split open an opponent’s defence does look well suited to life at Manchester City. Anderson is also adept at driving the ball through midfield with his dribbling which is a skill that would seamlessly slot into Manchester City’s midfield. Out of possession, Anderson reads the game exceptionally well and that ability, plus his strength in a duel and timing of a challenge would also complement what City have in midfield.

Manchester City are seemingly in pole position to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. It is unlikely to be a move that could happen during the January transfer window. But next summer seems like it will be when City could move for another midfielder. Elliot Anderson looks to be the player that City will move for to try and strengthen their midfield. He also looks to be ideally suited to playing in Manchester City’s midfield based on his strengths as a player.
