Manchester City are interested in moving for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer, according to journalist and transfer insider Ben Jacobs.

Manchester United were linked with the Newcastle star months ago, but it is their Etihad Stadium club counterparts who are looking to lure him away from the St. James’ Park club.

The Magpies want at least £100 million for Tonali, which has dissuaded Man United, and it remains to be seen if Man City are ready to meet Newcastle’s demands.

“I hear more movement on Man City and Tonali even though they are totally focused now on Elliot Anderson,” Jacobs told The United Stand.

“A lot of the noise around Tonali and a potential move has come out of the blue half of Manchester.

“Newcastle’s valuation is in excess of £100m, the wage is still high, the agent commissions are high as well.

“Unless something in those categories changes to open the possibility of getting a deal done cheaper, then I am not expecting Manchester United to do it on the terms that they think are currently in place, but if something drops, then of course the situation could change.”

The 26-year-old defensive midfielder was one of the best players at Newcastle last season, and a move to a Champions League club would appeal to him.

Man City and Man United are playing in the elite European competition next season and will both look to challenge Arsenal for the Premier League title.

Tonali is unlikely to realise his dreams of winning the title at Newcastle, and a summer exit could be on the cards.

Bernardo Silva’s exit from Man City at the end of his contract means they are looking to bolster their midfield.

While Anderson tops their list of potential targets, getting the Nottingham Forest star could prove tricky after their second offer worth £120m for him was knocked back.

Tonali is highly rated by City and they could move for him if Newcastle are willing to do business for a decent fee.
