Despite the stated wishes of the Manchester City loanee to find a permanent home in the Bundesliga, Issa Kaboré may be heading back to his parent club this season. The 23-year-old right wingback cannot seem to break the logjam at his position at SV Werder Bremen. It may be the case that the heavily capped Burkinabé international’s sixth loan stint will again not lead to a permanent purchase.
Kaboré’s usage under Bremen head coach Ole Werner refuses to follow much of a logical pattern. Thrice, Werner has included him in his starting XI. On the last occasion, against Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 26, Kaboré got his name on the scoresheet for the very first time by drawing a penalty shortly before the end of the first half.
Kaboré penalty enabled struggling RB Leipzig loanee André Silva to finally break his duck for Bremen. This nevertheless wasn’t enough for Werner to even include Kaboré in his matchday plans the subsequent week. Kaboré wasn’t even selected for the matchday squad. German wingback Derrick Köhn took his place. Sport Bild reports that the Hanseaten are not planning on keeping him.
In commenting on the exclusion, Werner cited Kaboré’s travel load for Burkina Faso during the recent international break. The head coach still seemed to suggest that he wasn’t expecting the Man City man to remain on the continent beyond the season. Köhn, team leader Mitchell Weiser, and scorer of a “dream goal Felix Agu remain ahead of the Man City man on the depth chart.
“We have a lot of players and all of them want to play,” Werner remarked at the post-match press conference. “In Issa’s case, he was away [on international duty] and missed a lot of the training week.
“The other guys – including Derrick Köhn – did well in training,” Werner continued. “I don’t want to say that the guys who came in today did better during the week, but they gave us a feeling that they are good options from the bench today and also fit the situation.”
