Despite the summer transfer window closing last week, teams are busy preparing shortlists of potential targets for the January transfer window. Manchester City will be doing precisely that as they plan for the next phase of the rebuild of Pep Guardiola’s squad. A new report indicates that City are the favourites to sign Real Madrid winger Rodrygo in January. That potential move may depend upon how Manchester City’s wingers perform up until that point of this season.

Manchester City are reportedly the favourites to sign Rodrygo during the January transfer window.

Ahad Shaukat has reported for CaughtOffside that Manchester City are considered the favourites to sign Rodrygo from Real Madrid in a few months. Furthermore, Shaukat reports that City are prepared to explore a deal for the Brazilian international during the January transfer window. Shaukat also reports that Real Madrid’s revised asking price of €80 million is considered good value by the City hierarchy. Lastly, Shaukat adds that City’s potential move for Rodrygo is once again dependent on their wider squad planning.

A January move for Rodrygo by City may depend on how Manchester City’s wingers perform.

During the summer transfer window, it seemed like Manchester City would only move for Rodrygo if Savinho left the club. Savinho stayed at City so that move never eventuated. Pep Guardiola’s side will continue with the attacking options that they have in the wing positions. How those players perform may well dictate whether or not City pursue a January move for Rodrygo.

Although Rodrygo can play across the front three, he generally does his best work on the left wing. At Manchester City, Jeremy Doku and Omar Marmoush currently play that role. Doku has made a slow start to this season. Omar Marmoush has played well but has yet to score a goal. If both players don’t fire, City may pursue a move for Rodrygo. He’s a proven performer for Real Madrid and would improve Manchester City’s attacking options. But if Doku and Marmoush fire, there wouldn’t be any need for City to pursue a move for Rodrygo.

Manchester City continue to be credited with an interest in Rodrygo. For now, it’s a story that will rumble away in the background. The January transfer window is months away from opening. The chances of City moving for Rodrygo may also be dependent on how Manchester City’s attacking players perform until January.
