It has been noticeable across Manchester City’s poor run of results that they have suffered from a lack of creativity in the final third. It has been one of several issues that have arisen during City’s past 12 games. What has stood out during the past two defeats for Manchester City is the lack of chances created for Erling Haaland. Heading into the Premier League champion’s Premier League clash with Everton it is something that must rectified. If it is it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Pep Guardiola’s side return to winning ways on Boxing Day.
Speaking ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Everton Pep Guardiola has refused to criticise City’s star striker. Guardiola instead spoke of his team’s need to create more chances for Haaland to do what he does best. Speaking during his pre-game press conference yesterday he said: “It is about us, not just one player. In the past, when we scored goals and Erling was so prolific and helping us, it was because of the team. But when you have problems at the back and middle, it is all about the team. Not just one player. If it’s just one player it would be easy to see the reason why. It’s not about that. Erling is so important for us, will be important for us and we need to use him better.”
It has been evident during City’s past two defeats to Manchester United and Aston Villa that Erling Haaland has been cut out of the game. Both teams have defended in a low block and Pep Guardiola’s side have struggled to create any chances for Haaland to do what he does best. It is one of many areas of concern for Manchester City. But if they can rectify that ahead of tomorrow night’s match against Everton it may prove to be the perfect remedy to cure City’s recent ailments.
As Pep Guardiola said the lack of service for Erling Haaland has caused his team issues. But it isn’t the only area of concern for the Manchester City manager. Facing Everton will be no easy task for a team that has only won one of their past twelve games. But if they can get their spark back in the final third it should aid their cause. If they can also provide Erling Haaland with the chances he needs to thrive that should also go a long way in helping Manchester City get back on track.
