Rodri’s recent comments about Real Madrid may have sparked widespread speculation, but within Manchester City, they have not caused any real shock.

According to recent reports from The Times, senior figures at City have long been aware of the midfielder’s long-term ambitions.

In fact, it is understood that Rodri mapped out his career path years ago, with a clear intention of eventually returning to Spain – whether that be through a reunion with former club Atletico Madrid or a potential move to Real Madrid.

What did Rodri say?

It must be noted that the Spanish midfielder recently talked about the possibility of joining Madrid in the future.

As such, Rodri did not attempt to distance himself from the idea. Instead, he addressed it directly, stating,

“Having played for Atletico Madrid doesn’t stop me from playing for Real Madrid; there are other players who have gone down that path.

“Not immediately, but over time. You can’t turn down the best clubs in the world,” he said.

Rodri also spoke about his admiration for Madrid’s iconic Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

“Playing at the Bernabeu is incredible. It’s a very intimidating place.”

While he is contracted to Manchester City for another year, his long-term vision appears to include a return to La Liga.

“Would I like to play in Spain and in Madrid in LaLiga again? I’d like to return, yes. Obviously.”

City not surprised

For Manchester City, this is not new information, as the club has always been aware of Rodri’s desire to eventually return to his home country.

However, timing will be crucial, as Rodri is currently under contract until 2027, which places City in a strong negotiating position should interest from Real Madrid materialise in the near future.

Any potential move would likely require a transfer fee, especially given his importance to Pep Guardiola’s system.

For now, there is no immediate change, but Rodri’s future may not lie in England forever.
