With his goal in Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Tijjani Reijnders has now scored three goals in his past five Premier League matches. After making a slow start to life at Manchester City, Reijnders is now becoming the goalscoring midfielder that City so desperately wanted. With Reijnders scoring regularly, Pep Guardiola’s side has another attacking weapon at their disposal, which complements what City already have in the final third.
When City signed Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan, the hope was that he would be the goalscoring midfielder that Manchester City needed. Yes, City already had Phil Foden at their disposal. But with Ilkay Gundogan coming towards the end of his career, and then subsequently moving to Galatasaray, City needed to replace the goals and forward runs that Gundogan provided for so long. In recent matches, Tijjani Reijnders has become to do this.
Tijjani Reijnders’ goals against Fulham, West Ham and Nottingham Forest have all come off the back of clever runs by Reijnders and smart finishes. The Dutch international is adept at arriving in the penalty area and in an attacking position at the right moment. Now the goals have started to flow for him. Earlier this season Reijnders was getting the opportunities and not taking them. Now that is putting his chances away Manchester City look a lot more lethal in the final third.

The attacking runs that Tijjani Reijnders makes perfectly complement the attacking weapons in the Manchester City squad. Erling Haaland draws defenders and the space his presence creates is made for a player with the attributes of Tijjani Reijnders to exploit. He has done exactly that recently. Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki need another player besides Haaland to pick out with their defence-splitting passes. Reijnders offers that option. The same can be said for Jeremy Doku who when fit has looked to have developed an understanding with Reijnders. The play of Tijjani Reijnders does mesh well with Manchester City’s attacking players and that makes Pep Guardiola’s side a much more dangerous proposition in the final third. They are now even more dangerous with Tijjani Reijnders putting his chances away.
The goals have finally arrived for Tijjani Reijnders. It is hoped that he can become a consistent goal scorer for Pep Guardiola’s side from this point onwards. If Reijnders’ goalscoring form continues Pep Guardiola’s side is infinitely more difficult to contain. That is exactly what Manchester City need as they chase honours on multiple fronts this season.
