Barcelona’s search for defensive reinforcements has taken a clear direction, and a familiar Premier League name is now firmly on the club’s radar.
According to a recent revelation by Jose Alvarez Haya on El Chiringuito TV, the player Barcelona are currently most interested in is Nathan Ake of Manchester City.
Internally, the profile is seen as almost ideal because Hansi Flick is a strong admirer of Ake, valuing his tactical intelligence, versatility, and calmness on the ball.
Barcelona believe that if the defender asks to leave, a scenario considered increasingly realistic with a World Cup approaching, a deal could become viable.
That is precisely what the club are waiting for.
The January transfer window has placed sporting director Deco under significant pressure.
He currently faces two major challenges. The first is managing the wage structure, particularly the situation of Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
The second, and more urgent task, is to deliver Flick’s top priority, which is a reliable, left-footed centre-back capable of contributing immediately.

In that regard, Ake has emerged as the preferred option, not only because of his qualities, but also due to his openness to the move.
At Manchester City, Ake has lost prominence. While he was never a guaranteed starter, his earlier seasons showed his value, whether as a centre-back or filling in at full-back.
His experience in the Premier League and with the Netherlands positions him as a player capable of delivering consistency from day one.
Financial reality, however, remains the biggest obstacle. Ake’s contract runs until 2027, and City are not known for offering discounts.
A permanent transfer is therefore unrealistic for Barcelona at this stage. The only workable formula would be a loan until the end of the season, with the final decision resting heavily on the player’s willingness to make sacrifices.
Barcelona are prepared to wait until after the Spanish Super Cup before making a final call.
If Ake truly wants the move, a strong personal push will be required. From Barça’s perspective, the door is open, but the next step must come from the player.
