Manchester City trio nominated for the Premier League’s top September awards

Three nominations have been received at Manchester City within the Premier League’s leading awards for the month of September, it has been confirmed.

City enjoyed an unbeaten run through September, marking a much-improved start to the Premier League campaign with statement results such as a 5-1 thrashing of Burnley at the Etihad Stadium and a dominant 3-0 derby victory over Manchester United.

Those results were separated by a hard-fought 1-1 draw away at Arsenal, leaving them in a healthy position in the league table heading into October and an increasingly congested fixture list.

Unsurprisingly, Erling Haaland was central to that success, with the Norwegian scoring twice against both Burnley and United, while also netting a crucial goal at the Emirates Stadium, which would later be cancelled out by Gabriel Martinelli.

Across the three matches, Haaland delivered five goals and one assist, averaging a goal contribution every 42 minutes – the kind of form that has already seen him scoop three Premier League Player of the Month awards since his arrival in England, with his last win coming in August 2024.

While Haaland’s output has been eye-catching, Pep Guardiola’s influence has been just as significant. Despite injury challenges, the Catalan guided his players to emphatic wins and a crucial point away at Arsenal.

Guardiola has claimed the Manager of the Month award 11 times in his career, though his last success dates back to December 2021 – a tally that places him alongside David Moyes, but still some way behind Arsene Wenger (15) and Sir Alex Ferguson (27).

Now, as confirmed by the Premier League this week, Erling Haaland has been nominated for Player of the Month alongside Crystal Palace’s Daichi Kamada, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Yankuba Minteh, Sunderland’s Robin Roefs and Granit Xhaka, and Arsenal’s Martin Zubimendi.

Manchester City’s fine run of performances and results across the month have also seen Pep Guardiola put forward for Manager of the Month, competing with Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, and Sunderland’s Régis Le Bris for the prize.

Finally, the Premier League have also announced that Gianluigi Donnarumma’s remarkable stop to deny Bryan Mbeumo in the 3-0 win over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium has been nominated for Save of the month in September.

The Italian competes with Emiliano Martinez against Everton, Karl Darlow against Fulham, Martin Dubravka against Nottingham Forest, Dean Henderson against Liverpool, and Sam Johnstone against Tottenham.

Manchester City’s dominance in the nominations reflects both their attacking firepower and defensive solidity, with Donnarumma following James Trafford’s August triumph as the second Etihad Stadium goalkeeper to be recognised this season.

His sprawling stop against Mbeumo came in a moment when United threatened to find a route back into the derby, underlining why Pep Guardiola’s summer investment in the Italian could prove decisive in Manchester City’s long-term plans.

Should Erling Haaland scoop his fourth Player of the Month award of his career, it would further cement his early claim to be the Premier League’s standout striker once again, while Guardiola’s recognition could end a surprising three-year drought without the managerial prize.

Meanwhile, Donnarumma taking the Save of the Month trophy would mark back-to-back Manchester City wins in the category for the very first time, off the back of their first-ever success with the award last month.

With numerous high-profile fixtures on the horizon, Manchester City will be looking to carry this individual momentum into collective results as they bid to stay on track in both domestic and European competition.
