Manchester United have full agreement on a deal to bring Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Old Trafford.

This is according to journalist Nicolo Schira, who posted the news on X this morning.

Schira said “Done Deal and confirmed! Matheus Cunha will become a Manchester United player from Wolverhampton for €70M (payments in 3 instalments). Contract until 2030 with the option for 2031.”

The news is yet to be verified by Tier 1 reporters such as David Ornstein or Fabrizio Romano, but nonetheless is an encouraging update from a well-known source.

It must be said, however, that Schira’s reliability is generally not considered to be close to that required for us to feel 100% confident before it is verified.

If Schira is correct, Cunha’s capture for £58.9 GBP will be slightly lower than his release clause, which could be possible if the package included other incentives such as bonuses based on number of appearances, international caps, goals scored, etc.

Spread over three years, the acquisition of the talented Brazilian using only £20 million of this summer’s transfer budget would be a masterstroke by Ineos.

Cunha has been keen all along to join United regardless of whether they achieved European football, so personal terms were never expected to be an issue.

Schira has not stated the salary package agreed.

As we await confirmation from other sources, it should be noted that FIFA’s extra transfer window from 1st to the 10th June this summer would still come too late for Cunha to debut in United’s post-season tour in Malaysia and Hong Kong on the 28th and 31st May.
