Manchester United are reportedly back in the hunt for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
It appeared that Tottenham Hotspur would pip Man United to the Portuguese, but things could change.
The Red Devils have reached out to Fernandes and his representatives in recent hours and are now willing to improve the personal terms they initially offered.
They also plan to hold direct talks with West Ham, and while Spurs remain in the race, United are willing to pull out all the stops to get their man.
The injury to Manuel Ugarte could have forced United to change their mind on Fernandes.
The Uruguay international had to be stretchered off against Spain in a World Cup match overnight and could spend up to 12 months on the sidelines.
It has thrown a spanner in the works for Man United as they had plans to sell him this summer and sign a replacement.
However, it is unclear whether they are now willing to pay around £80 million for the 21-year-old, having initially baulked at West Ham’s valuation.
