Leeds United could face a fight to keep first-choice goalkeeper Karl Darlow this summer amid interest from Manchester United.
The Athletic reports that United are ‘considering an approach’ for the Wales international, whose Leeds contract expires this summer, and that Elland Road chiefs want to keep him with a new deal.
Darlow made 22 Premier League appearances last season after stepping in for Lucas Perri. The 35-year-old was nominated for save of the season and has established himself as Wales No 1 under Craig Bellamy.
United are believed to be seeking depth in goal, with Altay Bayindir, back-up to Senne Lammens, expected to leave. Darlow’s homegrown status could further encourage interest.
Asked in late April about the futures of Darlow, Illan Meslier and Alex Cairns, Daniel Farke declined to discuss talks until everything is confirmed. He underlined his trust in Darlow, pointing to the run-in when he was No 1 and kept out the highly rated Perri. He added that he rates Darlow very highly and that there is big trust between them, inviting people to read between the lines.
Outside interest adds uncertainty, although competition was always likely for a homegrown free agent who has just shown his Premier League quality. Leeds have also tied down Ethan Ampadu to a new four-year contract, with chairman Parag Marathe calling it important for him and Farke to keep the core if possible.
