Manchester United considering buyback clause for left-back, despite being overlooked by Erik ten Hag

Manchester United are reportedly considering a move to sign a left-back they recently sold after being overlooked by Erik ten Hag.

Alvaro Fernandez Carreras spent four years at United before joining Benfica earlier this year. The Portuguese outfit signed the 21-year-old on loan before making his stay permanent in the summer.

After featuring as a substitute for the duration of his loan stint, the young Spaniard has cemented his place in the Benfica line-up this season. He has made seven starts and is now attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Reports suggest Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as Manchester United, have all sent scouts to take a closer look at Carreras.

According to O Jogo, United have a buyback clause and can activate it to beat Real Madrid and Barcelona to Carreras’ signature.

United already know a lot about the player after emerging from the academy, but they will be looking out for improvements in his game and whether he can make another step up.

Ten Hag decided to sign Sergio Reguilon on loan last season rather than put his trust into Carreras, which is why he left the club on loan, initially for Granada.

This season, however, Ten Hag has used Diogo Dalot on the lefty side of the defence due to the continued absence of both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

After being overlooked by Ten Hag, it might not take a lot for Real Madrid or Barcelona to persuade the player to push for a move elsewhere.

He’d be available unlike Shaw and Malacia.
