Manchester United’s young midfielder Jack Fletcher has been officially sanctioned by the English FA after making comments deemed discriminatory during an EFL Trophy match against Barnsley last October. Found guilty of “acting inappropriately and/or using abusive and/or insulting language,” the player has received a six-match suspension, a £1,500 fine, and is required to complete a mandatory educational program.
The son of former Scotland international Darren Fletcher, Jack quickly admitted to his actions and offered an apology.
"I am sincerely sorry for the offensive word I used in the heat of the moment. Even though I had no intention of using the term as a homophobic slur, I fully understand that this language is unacceptable and I apologized immediately after the match. I want to make it clear that this momentary lapse in judgment in no way reflects my beliefs or values."
In an official statement, Manchester United also responded by reaffirming its commitment to fighting all forms of discrimination.
"Manchester United has worked with Jack to strengthen his understanding of discriminatory language and why it is harmful," the club stated,
also confirming that the player will undergo educational training set up by the FA to prevent such incidents from happening again.
