Manchester United are plotting a move for Barcelona defender Jules Kounde, as per reports.
Kounde has been one of Barca’s most consistent players over the past three seasons, impressing as both central defender and right-back.
However, in recent days, the Frenchman, who joined Blaugrana from Sevilla in 2022, has made headlines for all the wrong reasons.
The 26-year-old was dropped for his side’s 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano on Monday after arriving late for a pre-match meeting.
He was also benched against Alaves earlier in the season for the same reason and concerns over Kounde’s disciplinary issues have now led to suggestions of an exit.
According to Fichajes, United are interested in Kounde and are “already working” on a proposal of €80 million to find an agreement with Barcelona over a summer transfer.
It is claimed United consider him “the ideal piece” to strengthen their defence, so much so that they are prepared to hand him a more lucrative contract than his current deal at Camp Nou.
The Spanish outlet underline that the France international’s relationship with the club’s coaching staff has had its “ups and downs” this campaign. This friction has led to some unrest in the dressing room.
However, the Barcelona board remain adamant that Kounde is not for sale as they see him as a crucial part of their project.
It is understood that United’s mega offer could test the Catalan giants’ resolve in the summer.
Amorim believes Kounde would be a perfect fit for his system that relies on three centre-backs.
With Lisandro Martinez sidelined for a considerable period of time, the Portuguese head coach might push for a new player to strengthen his backline ahead of next season.
