During the January window, Roma presented Zirkzee with a four-year contract offer worth €3 million net per year plus bonuses to prise him away from Old Trafford, and the player was keen on a move.

However, United refused to sanction the exit. Roma director of football Frederic Massara conceded that United had said “no quite clearly” and had not changed their minds, leaving the Giallorossi with no option but to bide their time.

That time has now arrived. Roma are seeking to add another striker to Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad, despite signing Donyell Malen from Aston Villa.

Zirkzee’s ability to drop deep, link play, and bring others into the game made him a standout performer at Bologna, and Roma view him as an ideal addition.

From United’s perspective, the summer calculus is different. The club values Zirkzee at around £30.5 million—a figure that represents a reasonable return on an investment that simply has not worked out at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old has never convincingly established himself under any manager since arriving from Bologna in 2024, and his recent display against Sunderland was further proof that his time in Manchester has not gone as planned.

Sitting fifth in Serie A, Roma are on course to secure Europa League football for next season, but they are only behind Juventus on goal difference, leaving Champions League football well within their sights.
