Manchester United plan to lodge a formal complaint with Professional Game Match Officials Limited, PGMOL, after being denied a penalty in Friday’s 2-2 draw at Bournemouth. According to NY Times, the club believe similar incidents were handled inconsistently during the game.

United went ahead on 61 minutes when Bruno Fernandes converted from the spot after Alex Jimenez pulled Matheus Cunha by the shirt.

With United 1-0 up in the second half, Amad cut inside and Adrien Truffert placed two arms on his shoulder. Referee Stuart Attwell played on, Bournemouth broke and Ryan Christie equalised. VAR Craig Pawson later judged the contact was not sufficient for a penalty.

United regained the lead with 19 minutes remaining as James Hill headed into his own net. Bournemouth levelled again on 78 minutes from the spot after Harry Maguire was penalised for a foul on Evanilson, and he received a straight red for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity after a VAR review deemed it a holding offence with no attempt to win the ball.

Michael Carrick voiced his frustration afterwards, arguing the two penalty incidents were essentially the same and saying he could not understand why one was awarded and the other not.
