Beaten Europa League finalists end wretched season at home to Unai Emery’s Champions League chasers

Manchester United end a truly miserable Premier League season at home to Champions League-chasing Aston Villa today.

Following that loss in Bilbao it will be interesting to hear the reception the players get from the Old Trafford faithful, with protests set to continue.

Perhaps the one incentive for United is avoiding finishing lower than 16th in the table. They can still climb as high as 14th but are dependent on West Ham and Wolves failing to win their respective fixtures.

On the other hand, sixth-place Villa can still qualify for the Champions League as they are embroiled in a fascinating race to finish in the top five.

They go into this fixture level on points with Chelsea in fifth but know their fate is not in their own hands - even if they win at the Theatre of Dreams.

The only positive from a United perspective to come from the Europa League final loss was no fresh injuries. In fact, Leny Yoro, Diogo Dalot and Joshua Zirkzee all returned from spells on the sidelines in a triple boost.

Lisandro Martinez will remain sidelined and Matthijs de Ligt is a doubt after missing the last four games.

Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Victor Lindelof will be among those pushing for starts having been named on the bench in Bilbao.

Villa are without Marcus Rashford, the United loanee who is ineligible to face his parent club but has been injured of late anyway. Influential midfielder Youri Tielemans is expected to be involved after returning to training, while Jacob Ramsey is available after suspension.

Wednesday night would have been a bitter pill to swallow for Manchester United and it is hard to see Ruben Amorim galvanising this group of players for a fixture that ultimately means nothing.

Whereas Villa must win. There’s an argument that Unai Emery does tend to buckle when under pressure, but he will recognise this is a perfect time to finally register a win at Old Trafford.
