Manchester United will look to focus on an FA Cup run amid their dismal Premier League form as they welcome Leicester to Old Trafford on Friday night.
The fourth-round tie set to be broadcast on ITV, with kick off at 20:00 GMT.
Manchester United: (3-4-3): Bayindir, Yoro, Maguire, De Ligt, Dalot, Ugarte, Mainoo, Dorgu, Diallo, Hojlund, Fernandes
Leicester City (4-2-3-1): Stolarczyk, Justin, Coady, Faes, Kristiansen, Winks, Soumare, Ayew, El Khannouss, Mavididi, Vardy
Ruben Amorim has an opportunity to switch things up a bit for this cup clash. After a miserable 2-0 home defeat against Crystal Palace on Sunday, he may feel a need to make changes or inject some confidence into certain players.
Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir should come in for Andre Onana, as he has done in previous cup games. There will be one change guaranteed in defence, as Lisandro Martinez was ruled out for the season with an ACL injury. There might also be a chance to rest one of his other defenders and bring in Matthijs de Ligt.
The signing of Patrick Dorgu means Amorim can field a fresh face at left wing-back. It may also allow him to switch Diogo Dalot back into his natural position on the right and rest Noussair Mazraoui.
The tactical gamble of playing Kobbie Mainoo up front against Palace backfired spectacularly and you can expect the midfielder to return to the middle of the park alongside Manuel Ugarte. Amorim should instead push Bruno Fernandes further forward and hand Rasmus Hojlund a chance to show United didn’t need to sign a striker on deadline day.
Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has a tough task on his hands at the King Power. After their 4-0 defeat to Everton, he’ll face a difficult decision over whether to go as strong as possible or rest players for the relegation fight ahead.
In the last round of the FA Cup, which saw Leicester beat QPR 6-2, Van Nistelrooy made a handful of changes. Jakub Stolarczyk came in between the sticks for Hermansen. Hermansen is now back from injury but may still be rested here.
Van Nistelrooy also made a solitary change at centre-back as Conor Coady came in for Jannik Vestergaard and this might be a good opportunity to refresh his back four again.
In midfield you can expect the same centre-mid pairing of Harry Winks and Boubakary Soumare. Elsewhere, Stephy Mavididi could come in for Bobby De Cordova-Reid. He will then have the option of playing Patson Daka if he feels Jamie Vardy could do with a rest, despite his love of facing ‘Big Six’ teams.
The Red Devils might actually be disappointed they’re not playing this cup tie away from home. Amorim’s side have a rotten record at Old Trafford this season.
After their 2-0 loss to Palace here last week, they’ve now lost seven of their first 13 home matches in the Premier League this term. That’s their worst since the 1893-94 season.
To paint the bigger picture of their struggles at home, only Wolves (16) have managed to lose more matches at home than United’s 13. And after Palace failed to win any of their first 10 visits to Old Trafford – including nine straight defeats – they’ve now won four of their last six away games there.
Palace’s eye-opening win on Sunday was their second straight victory at United after losing 1-0 at home last season. United will hope things change against a struggling Leicester side that have lost eight of their last nine games.
It might not be a disaster for the Foxes if they go out of the cup so they can focus on surviving in the Premier League. But United should still expect the Foxes to go for it on Friday night with no pressure and the chance to hurt Amorim’s men.
