Michael Olise’s slow exit against Northern Ireland triggered FIFA’s new substitution rule, forcing Manu Koné to wait until the next stoppage and briefly leaving France with 10 men.

L'Équipe notes this occurred in Monday’s 3-1 friendly in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, where Olise hit a hat-trick in the 43rd, 48th and 75th minutes.

The regulation, introduced ahead of the 2026 World Cup, scheduled from 11 June to 19 July, requires players to exit within 10 seconds or their replacement must wait until play next stops.

Olise acknowledged the acclaim from the crowd as he departed, and Koné was only allowed on more than a minute later.

France were a man light for a few seconds and, while it did not matter here, it could prove costly in a match with something at stake. Didier Deschamps appeared to caution Olise as he came off.
