Manuel Neuer: The X factor who makes everything look so easy

He stood there, like a rock in front of the threatening white wave. With outstretched arms, Manuel Neuer celebrated in front of the Real end and for a moment looked much bigger than 1.93 metres. Vinicius Junior, Madrid’s Brazilian superstar, had just run through towards his goal. Normally it would be a certain goal – but what’s normal with Manuel Neuer? The Bayern custodian cleverly shortened the angle, forced Vini Jr. wide and he could only find the side netting. Whether Neuer in fact got a touch to the ball with his foot, or whether his clever charge and his unique presence were enough to thwart this Real chance, was ultimately immaterial.

It was just one of several brilliant actions from Neuer on this night at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. The man who turned 40 nearly two weeks ago repeatedly frustrated the Real attack. For some, this performance even brought to mind one of the goalkeeper’s first Champions League appearances, when Neuer – then still wearing the FC Schalke 04 jersey – announced himself on the European stage in March 2008 with some unbelievable saves against FC Porto. Eighteen years later, on the biggest stage of all – in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals at Real Madrid – Neuer did exactly what the whole world now knows him for – and either fears or loves him for.

The ‘GOATkeeper’ saved with sensational reflexes, including multiple times against Kylian Mbappé, the top scorer in this season’s Champions League. In total Neuer registered nine saved shots. Even for the Madrid goal, the Bayern captain somehow turned Mbappé’s shot from close range onto the bar with an incredible reflex, but could no longer prevent the ball from bouncing in. In the end, FCB ran out 2-1 winners and Neuer, who stood out from a strong Bayern collective in this thrilling and top-quality European heavyweight clash, was deservedly named ‘Player of the Match’.

When asked about the performance of the man behind him afterwards, Jonathan Tah just replied: “Are you surprised?” and laughed. “He has a special aura, also with the saves he repeatedly makes. You shouldn’t take it for granted but it’s normal for him,” added the centre-back. “I’m not surprised,” explained head coach Vincent Kompany. “It wasn’t just experience, it was quality. He was very agile, which he only manages because he does so much for his body during the week. He makes it look so easy. You see these saves, which all look so safe, but they’re difficult moments for a goalkeeper. We needed that, and we’ll need those moments again in the coming weeks.”

Board member for sport Max Eberl was also full of praise: “To be honest it doesn’t amaze me. Manu is having a very good season. He performed brilliantly tonight and rescued us in one or two situations.” CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen singled out Neuer’s display in his speech at the post-match banquet, putting it in a nutshell: “We had something in our performance tonight that Real didn’t have: we had our X factor, our world-class goalkeeper. Manuel, you were extraordinary.”

Neuer himself reflected on his performance with his usual modesty. “Of course, you're going to concede chances against such a strong attack, but that's what I'm there for,” said the Bayern captain, who already turned the focus to the return leg. “That was the first step. We know it’s still going to be a hard task for us in Munich. We need to produce another good performance and utilise our home advantage.” There are sure to be plenty of waves of Real attacks coming towards the Bayern goal at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday, but Bayern can still rely on their rock Manuel Neuer in 2026.
