After joining Girona on loan from FC Barcelona to secure regular playing time ahead of the World Cup, Germany's first-choice goalkeeper, Marc-André ter Stegen, has suffered a new setback.

In a statement on Monday, Girona confirmed that the 33-year-old sustained a hamstring injury during Saturday’s match against Oviedo.

Ter Stegen will now undergo further medical tests to determine the full diagnosis and establish a recovery prognosis.

According to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, the goalkeeper could be sidelined for up to two months, with an early return to Barcelona under consideration.

If he is indeed out for that long, ter Stegen’s chances of making Germany’s World Cup squad could be in serious jeopardy.
