England manager Thomas Tuchel has praised Marc Guehi’s professionalism after the Crystal Palace defender saw his anticipated move to Liverpool fall through. Tuchel confirmed that he had spoken with the centre-back following the collapse of the transfer, but insisted the player has shown nothing but focus and resilience.
“Of course we had a chat with him. He looks absolutely fine and impressive on the field, he has a good couple of weeks behind him on the performance side,” Tuchel said.
Liverpool had been strongly linked with Guehi as part of their long-term defensive rebuild, but the move failed to materialise before the transfer deadline. Despite the disappointment, Tuchel made clear that Guehi’s response has been exemplary.

Guehi’s form for Crystal Palace has made him one of the most admired young defenders in the Premier League. His role as captain underlines his importance to the team and the respect he commands within the dressing room. Tuchel highlighted this quality when discussing his progress.
“He is the main driver of Crystal Palace’s success, he is the captain and the leader and he played very impressively at the end of last season,” the England boss noted.
That consistency has carried into international duty, where Guehi has impressed coaches and team-mates alike. The ability to compartmentalise transfer speculation and continue performing at a high level is a testament to his growing maturity.
As England prepare for their next round of fixtures, Guehi’s conduct has stood out. Tuchel pointed to the defender’s mentality as a reason for optimism about his continued development.
“He has continued like that in camp and he handles it [his transfer situation] with respect and with brilliant attitude,” Tuchel said.
Such words reflect the high regard in which Guehi is held, not only as a footballer but also as a professional. While the move to Liverpool may have to wait, his performances for both Palace and England suggest it is a matter of when, not if, elite clubs come calling again.

For Liverpool, Guehi remains a defender of significant interest. His composure, strength in duels and leadership qualities would add much to a side seeking stability at the back. The failed transfer should not be seen as an end to the story, particularly with Liverpool’s defence still in transition.
For now, Palace retain their captain, a player whose value extends beyond the pitch. Guehi’s determination to focus on his current role, despite speculation, ensures he will continue to be a cornerstone for club and country. Tuchel’s reassurance serves to underline that the defender’s character is as impressive as his talent.
