Liverpool have been left with a shortage of senior centre-back options following their transfer business conducted so far this summer.
Jarell Quansah has left for Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth over £30m - leaving Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez as the only senior players in the position.

There is no doubt Giovanni Leoni will prove to be a smart pick-up in time - but the £26m signing from Parma is only 18 years old and it remains to be seen how often Arne Slot is going to use the Italian.
That’s why we’ve seen the Reds linked with proven Premier League-ready central defenders this summer - with Marc Guehi reported to be high on the list.
Guehi, 25, captained Crystal Palace to the FA Cup last season and is right at the peak of his powers. Unfortunately for Palace, the England international is out of contract in 2026 and the indications are very much that he will not sign a new deal.
Rather than lose their skipper for free, Palace would prefer to gain some transfer income on him this summer - even if that means selling him for vastly beneath his true value.
It’s not dissimilar to the situation Liverpool are facing with Konate - who is being heavily courted by Real Madrid ahead of his 2026 contract expiry.
Guehi is valued by Palace chairman Steve Parish at around £40m - but the signs are that Liverpool are unwilling to go beyond £30m at this stage.
Nonetheless there are signs of progress in this deal with a new claim that the Eagles are pushing Guehi towards the exit door. With the transfer window closing on September 1, Palace are in a rush to do a deal for their captain and also bring in a replacement.
Links with Ousmane Diomande have gone nowhere but there appears to be movement for Joel Ordonez and Lloyd Kelly - two players previously linked with Liverpool.

And according to TBR Football, Parish is trying to make a deal with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes before the transfer deadline.
“Steve Parish is attempting to push the Crystal Palace No.6 towards Liverpool before the transfer deadline on Monday 1st September,” the report reads.
This is a significant update as it suggests that Palace are no longer expecting to keep Guehi around for the 2025/26 season.
Instead he could be on his way to Anfield IMMINENTLY to star alongside Van Dijk and compete with Konate before his own future is resolved.
The gap between both clubs’ valuations currently stands at around £10m - let’s hope Liverpool can broach that gap in the next week or so.
