Marcelo Bielsa felt his Leeds United legacy around Wembley and explained why he greeted former Elland Road defender Ben White before England’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, four years after his Elland Road tenure ended, the 70-year-old Argentine manager was serenaded by Leeds fans carrying Bielsa flags inside and outside the ground. After the match, supporters paused Uruguay’s team bus for photos, Bielsa smiling and waving.

On the pitch, Leeds had representation as striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin came on in the second half. White, once on loan at Leeds under Bielsa, tapped in at the back post in the 81st minute to put England ahead. Uruguay then won a late, controversial penalty for a White foul, and Federico Valverde converted.

Amid the adoration, Bielsa headed to the England bench beforehand to see White, one of his former Leeds players.

Bielsa said: “I simply said hello to him. Obviously I have known him for a very long time. I was just very happy to see him and happy to see how he has developed in his career so I simply just saw him as I was sitting there and it was an opportunity to see him and say hello.”
