Benfica’s pre-season under Marco Silva is taking shape at Seixal, with the squad being reshaped. According to Glorioso 1904, Marco Silva is expected to have Clément Lenglet at Benfica and is still waiting for a winger to bolster the flanks.
Lenglet, 31, has been identified as the defensive recruit long admired by the coach from his Fulham days. He turned down more lucrative offers, including from Saudi football, and is expected to sign a three-year deal at the Estádio da Luz to take a leading role at centre-back.
The centre-back arrives from Atlético Madrid after two seasons in Spain. His career includes stints with Barcelona, Tottenham and Aston Villa, with more than 160 appearances for the Catalan club before a period of reduced prominence.
Last season he fell down the pecking order at Atlético, the fourth most used centre-back, and a decisive Champions League mistake against Lamine Yamal further hurt his standing. Even so, he retains international status with 16 France caps and significant experience on major European stages.
Despite Lenglet’s imminent arrival, Benfica’s market work is not finished. A winger remains a priority after Rui Costa pledged another wide addition, and the board aims to balance the squad before the season starts.
