Benfica have reinforced the centre of defence with Clément Lenglet and Gabriel Índio, and are now targeting a left winger.
Record reports that Marco Silva wants to keep Andreas Schjelderup, viewing the Norway international as a pillar of his project. He favours direct competition in the role rather than sourcing a replacement.
The strategy aims to heighten internal rivalry, add depth for a long season and provide immediate cover whenever the Norwegian is absent.
Spending is set to focus on that flank after Sidny Cabral’s exit. The Cape Verde international endured a muted spell at the Estádio da Luz before joining Trabzonspor for seven million euros.
Despite the need, the Rui Costa-led hierarchy remain committed to a careful market. An earlier than usual start will not force decisions, though the chase for a winger is close to concluding and a deal is expected next week.
