Former Flamengo executive Marcos Braz, now at Remo, has defended the 2022 decision to part with Dorival Júnior, saying he would make the same change again.

"We started renewal talks and made an offer. A counter-offer came and, in the middle of that, we felt we should not be held hostage and went another way. That is what happened. Maybe if we had more certainty about a, b or c, we could have extended talks for a new contract," he told GE.

"But we felt we should make a change, and it was done. Talking about it on the back of later results is very difficult. I think... no, I would make the change again."

Dorival’s 2022 spell brought trophies after he replaced Paulo Sousa, whose tenure fell short. Despite a slow start, Flamengo rallied to win the Libertadores and the Copa do Brasil. He left after 43 matches with 26 wins, eight draws and nine defeats.

Flamengo and Corinthians will contest the Supercopa do Brasil final on one February at Estádio Mané Garrincha, with Dorival now in charge of Corinthians. Flamengo also face Fluminense on Sunday, 25 January, at 18:00 Brasília time at the Maracanã in the fourth round of the Campeonato Carioca.
