Enzo Fernandez cost a vast amount of money, and won the best young player award at a World Cup, which makes it easy to forget he arrived at Chelsea with relatively little senior experience and with plenty of room still to develop.

In quotes on the Chelsea official website this week, his manager Enzo Maresca spoke a little about how he’s been developing his namesake in training:

“He’s understanding the game much better compared to the beginning of the season,” Maresca explained.

“I think that is something normal when you start a new process. Also, the way that we want him to play is a bit different from the past, not only last year, but two or three years ago when he was in Portugal or Argentina,” the Italian coach continued.

He’s a senior member of this squad – but that doesn’t mean there’s not plenty of areas he can work on.

Maresca confident Enzo can find his scoring touch again

A couple of months ago, a spurt of goals and assists from the Argentine was really helping Chelsea pick up points. As his productivity on that front has faded, so has Chelsea’s form. They’re now without a win in 5 Premier League games, and a major part of that is a lack of efficiency in front of goal.

Maresca claimed that he was confident his £100m man was going to find that form again and help take the scoring burden off Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson.

“We were sure he was going to score goals and give us clear chances and I think, being even more clinical, he could score three or four more goals with those three or four chances. We have no doubt that we will soon be there with Enzo and all the team.”

Let’s hope so – we need him.
