Maricá defeat keeps Flamengo off Group B bottom in Carioca | OneFootball

Maricá’s 1-0 home defeat to Sampaio Corrêa kept Flamengo off the bottom of Group B and sustained their push to reach the Campeonato Carioca quarter-finals, avoiding the relegation quadrangular.

According to Coluna Do Fla, Flamengo had spent recent days hoping Madureira, Nova Iguaçu and Maricá would slip. Madureira and Nova Iguaçu faltered on Monday 27, then on Tuesday 28 Maricá, coached by former Flamengo man Reinaldo, were beaten at home in round four.

In the Carioca, teams face opponents from the opposite group. From Group B, only Botafogo won in this round. Madureira lost to Portuguesa, Boavista were beaten by Vasco, Nova Iguaçu drew 2-2 with Volta Redonda, and Flamengo went down 2-1 to Fluminense.

Despite help elsewhere, Flamengo have played a game more, so the picture remains complicated. They must reach seven points by beating Sampaio Corrêa on the final matchday.

They also need two of these four sides to fall short of seven points over their remaining two matches: Madureira (6), Boavista (6), Nova Iguaçu (5) and Maricá (3).
