France’s Sports Minister Marina Ferrari has condemned racist attacks aimed at Kylian Mbappé by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla.

In a post on X on Monday, Ferrari denounced the messages in the strongest terms.

Amarilla, of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party, posted overnight from Saturday to Sunday, mocking the France captain’s literacy, using dehumanising stereotypes involving chimpanzees and coconuts, and calling him a colonised Cameroonian pretending to be French, as well as resentful, nouveau riche, arrogant and ugly.

Ferrari described the remarks as abject and unworthy, and said they were all the more unacceptable coming from an elected official. She added that France would not remain silent in the face of racism, and that an attack on Mbappé was an attack on the values he and the country embody, namely liberty, equality and fraternity.

The posts followed France’s 1-0 win over Paraguay on Saturday in the 2026 World Cup round of 16. Before the tie, former Paraguay goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert had also targeted Les Bleus, referencing 1998 and asserting Paraguay would face an African selection in response to comments by Christophe Dugarry on RMC.
