Mário Zambujal, the Portuguese writer and journalist and Benfica member number 1902, has died aged 90. Benfica marked his passing with a tribute on its official website on Thursday.
The club said in a statement that he was a defining figure in Portuguese journalism and literature, praising the quality of his writing and his keen eye on the country’s society over many decades.
Benfica also highlighted his enduring connection with the club, noting he had been a member since 1959 and had publicly expressed his affection for the badge.
The message described him as part of the wider Benfica family, and offered sincere condolences to his relatives and friends at this time.
Zambujal worked as a sports journalist at RTP and became known as the presenter of “Grande Encontro”.
