Mariona Caldentey helped puncture the fear around leaving Barça and Liga F for England’s top flight, a trail many have since followed. Spain now meet England at Wembley on Tuesday at 20:00 on La 2.
"There are many changes, leaving your comfort zone not only in football but in life. The winter has been hard, very cold, little sun, many hours of darkness. I am happy, it is a change that has done me good, I am learning a lot and enjoying the experience. I think it is making me a better player," she said. She told EL PERIÓDICO.
England’s league was reshaped after Euro 2022, becoming a more competitive, fully professional environment that has quickly set the standard. With 12 clubs rather than the 16 in Liga F, travel is lighter and recovery better, and the professionalism runs across the division. The bottom side can beat the top on any given weekend.
Caldentey, who recently celebrated 100 caps for Spain, now returns to Wembley, the scene of their Euro 2022 exit. Spain have never won there.
Irene Paredes described meetings between these teams as a global classic, saying supporters enjoy them and players relish them, while underlining Spain’s belief in their approach.
For Sonia Bermúdez it will be a first visit. She called the stadium spectacular, expected a full house, felt the game could be decided by small details and hoped Spain can take three points.
