After five matchdays in the revamped UEFA Champions League, Paris Saint-Germain find themselves in quite a predicament. Having won their first game of the campaign courtesy of Paulo Gazzaniga’s spill in the match against Girona, PSG are yet to win since and have registered three defeats in that time.

Their latest came on Tuesday, at the hands of Bayern Munich (1-0). It means that Les Parisiens currently sit 26th in the standings, a position that could – and likely will – worsen after Wednesday night’s fixtures. In order to qualify for the play-off phase of the competition, PSG will have to finish 24th or higher.

However, the fixture list isn’t about to get any easier. The Ligue 1 leaders next face Red Bull Salzburg before fixtures against Manchester City and VfB Stuttgart. The latter, just one place ahead of PSG in the standings, may, like Luis Enrique’s side, have something to play for come that final game.

Marquinhos criticial of referee in PSG defeat

Within this context, Marquinhos has admitted that there is “worry” about the current situation. “If we look at the standings, we’re worried. It’s normal. Our objective is to qualify,” the PSG captain told Canal Plus.

The Brazilian was also critical of the refereeing performance, which he believes cost his side in Bavaria. “I asked the referee what happened. A player is blocking and isn’t playing the ball. The goalkeeper can’t do anything,” he said, referencing the action in the lead-up to the goal with Matvei Safonov failing to clear a corner.

He added, “We don’t like to talk about refereeing but he didn’t make the task easy for us.” It is not an easy task that now awaits PSG as they look to climb the table and ensure their place in the next phase of the Champions League.
