Freshly crowned a double European champion with PSG, Marquinhos is approaching the World Cup by treating every match as if it were his last. As captain, he hopes this mindset can help Brazil pursue a sixth global title.

As reported by L'Équipe, he said on Wednesday, at the five-time world champions’ first press conference since arriving in the United States, that he increasingly views this tournament as possibly his final World Cup and a last chance to add more trophies.

He also revisited Saturday’s Champions League final against Arsenal, which finished 1-1 after extra time before PSG won 4-3 on penalties. Marquinhos consoled Gabriel Magalhaes, his Brazil centre-back partner, embracing him after the defender’s missed kick.

Remembering Brazil’s 2022 World Cup exit to Croatia, 1-1 after extra time and 4-2 on penalties, he said that moment had been particularly painful and that similar support would have helped him then. He told Gabriel to keep his head up, stressing the squad will need him soon and that he is very important.

Brazil begin their 2026 World Cup campaign on 13 June against Morocco. Before that, they play a final friendly on Saturday against Egypt in Cleveland.
