"It is a very serious situation when there is a tournament and that information comes out. We investigated at the time and it was an accident, not a disciplinary act," said Roberto Martínez, speaking to Record.

The Portugal head coach was referring to Benfica centre-back António Silva disclosing the starting XI before Portugal’s Euro 2024 match against Georgia without authorisation.

"That already happened at Euro 2024, it is not part of the choices now. We are already two years ahead and António has learned from it."

Silva was left out of Portugal’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

On Tuesday, Benfica marked his omission with the phrase "Um de nós" alongside a photo of the Portugal international in red.

In 2025/26 for Benfica, Silva played 41 competitive games, 25 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 10 in the Champions League, four in the Taça de Portugal, one in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça.

Across 3,118 minutes, the defender scored one goal and supplied one assist, and is valued at 28 million euros.
