Marvin Senaya picks Ghana in bizarre dual call-up situation

One of those stories that feels almost too bizarre to be true - but very much is - sees Auxerre right-back Marvin Senaya at the centre of an international tug-of-war.

Born in Saint-Maurice, France, Senaya has a rich mix of heritage. He is the son of former footballer Yao Senaya, who was born in Togo and also holds Ghanaian nationality. That background has put the defender firmly on the radar of multiple African national teams, each eager to secure his commitment.

The situation took an unusual twist this week when both Togo and Ghana named Senaya in their squads at virtually the same time. Two call-ups, one player - as if he could somehow represent both during the same international break.

It’s a clear example of the growing competition between nations for dual-national players, something increasingly common in modern football. For Senaya, the decision goes beyond family ties and into footballing ambition: where will he have the best chance to play and compete at the highest level?

For now, that question appears to have been answered. Ghana, preparing for the upcoming World Cup, have won the race. Senaya confirmed his decision publicly, expressing pride at the opportunity.

“I feel deeply honoured to represent my country,” he said. “Ghana has a rich footballing history, and I will wear the shirt with pride, loyalty and commitment.”

Despite that, there have been reports of disagreement behind the scenes, with both federations claiming they had the player’s approval.

Regardless, Senaya is now expected to link up with Ghana for upcoming friendlies against Austria and Germany as they step up their World Cup preparations.
