Mason Greenwood underlined his value again in the Coupe de France, scoring in Marseille’s 3-0 win over Rennes on Tuesday, and he will be OM’s leading threat against PSG on Sunday.
L'Équipe notes that OM’s long hunt for a “grantatakan” has faded. Greenwood has effectively become the team’s number 10. He finished last season as joint Ligue 1 top scorer on 21 goals, symbolically edged by Ousmane Dembele on the penalties count, one against seven.
This season he is matching last term’s league pace at the 20th round, with 13 goals and four assists, and he already has 22 goals and eight assists in all competitions. He is the only Marseille player to have scored in every competition, from Ligue 1 and the Champions League to the Trophée des champions and the Coupe de France, where he struck again against Rennes.
In December, Roberto De Zerbi said Greenwood had huge potential and could even chase the Ballon d’Or. The coach has started him throughout the cup, at Bourg-en-Bresse in a 6-0 and at Bayeux in a 9-0, the latter for the full match.
He is now playing almost every game. A benching in the 3-1 win over Lens on 24 January was an exception, planned before the decisive Champions League trip to Bruges that ended 0-3.
Relations have eased after first season tensions. Internally, De Zerbi is no longer alternating between affection and provocation, as when he omitted Greenwood for the Parc Classique lost 1-3 on 16 March 2025. It is now inconceivable he is left out, and he returns to the Parc on Sunday to face PSG.
