Mason Greenwood move lifts OM boycott, but some fans say the shame remains | OneFootball

Mason Greenwood's move from OM to Fenerbahçe, confirmed on Tuesday, has eased boycotting Marseille fans. L'Équipe reports they can return to the Vélodrome, though many feel their passion has been scarred.

Sara, Nash and Marjorie have followed OM since childhood. “Like any good Marseillais, it started at birth,” said Marjorie.

When Greenwood arrived in summer 2024, they stopped. He had been accused by partner Harriet Robson in early 2022 of attempted rape and assault, before prosecutors dropped the case in early 2023. “As an OM supporter I felt slapped, and as a woman even more so,” said Sara.

“All my red lines had been crossed,” said Nash. Marjorie decided not to watch a game while he wore OM’s shirt, and Nash said it felt like ending a relationship you knew you could not continue.

Two years on, he is gone. “It lifts a great weight,” said Sara. Marjorie called it “the best day of the year”, yet Sara added that Greenwood’s signing remains a lasting disappointment, unlike Carquefou 0-1 in 2008, or Annecy 2-2, 6-7 on pens in 2023.

They plan to follow OM again, but with more distance. Sara wondered if she would still sacrifice time with loved ones or let results ruin a Sunday night. Nash felt the player has gone but the shame remains, and criticised a club hierarchy that said Greenwood had the club’s values and fans who continued to applaud him.

Marjorie believes the passion will return, because, she said, it is OM.
