Mason Greenwood will miss Marseille’s trip to Monaco on 5 April through suspension, adding to an injury scare at a delicate stage in their Champions League push.
According to L'Équipe, he went off early against Lille after a challenge from Calvin Verdonk left his left leg too painful to continue. His caution on the day was a fifth of the season and a third in the last four games. Monday’s tests showed a dead leg in the left quadriceps, and he now has the international break to recover.
Habib Beye had warned players about looming bans, and staff reminded Greenwood not to remove his shirt after scoring. The caution instead followed a flare-up after the Verdonk foul and a shove from Haraldsson.
The disciplinary commission could yet rescind what was seen as a harsh yellow at its next meeting, and the club would not say if it will appeal. Beye chiefly rued the injury, feeling it changed the game given Greenwood’s attacking influence.
Since his arrival in summer 2024 Greenwood has played 75 matches, 6,075 minutes in total, eight more than any team-mate. He has been a substitute only five times and missed one game, when Roberto De Zerbi left him unused at Auxerre, which ended 1-0 in early November.
Without him in the starting XI the points return is similar at 1.8 per game, but Marseille score 2.2 per match with him compared with 1.4 without. He has 25 goals this season. In his absence, Ethan Nwaneri and Hamed Junior Traoré are short of rhythm, so Beye may tweak the attack and finally pair Amine Gouiri with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
