Manchester United finally returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a come-from-behind 2-1 win away at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
The Red Devils’ recent record against the Eagles included two losses and a draw in which they conceded six times while not even finding the back of the net once.
That combined with Palace’s unbeaten streak at home meant the visitors were in for a tough game. And that’s how the match unfolded in the first half.
Despite playing in midweek, the home side looked well up for it, while United looked lethargic. Jean-Philippe Mateta gave Oliver Glasner’s team a deserved first half lead.
Ruben Amorim must have gone bonkers at half-time, as United emerged with much more purpose in the second half. After a close shave right at the start, United finally equalised through Joshua Zirkzee.
Not soon after, Mason Mount combined with Bruno Fernandes to score the winner. It was the Englishman’s first start in four league games, and he made his chance count.
This was the first time the England international completed 90 minutes in the Premier League for the 20-time English league champions.
And that made the occasion even sweeter for the ex-Chelsea ace. Speaking to TNT Sports, he said, “I’m feeling good. The win obviously was massive today, but also for me to play the full game.
“I haven’t done that in a while so I’ve been feeling really, really good recently, no problems. I’m enjoying my football and when you have days like this in front of the fans like this, it makes it all worth it.”
The 26-year-old was also quick to stress that the entire team were distraught at what happened against Everton last week, they wanted to respond in the best way possible in a difficult away game.
He also lauded his teammates for fighting back after going a goal down, instead of allowing their heads to drop, something that plagued them against the Toffees.
“We’ve not found it easy away from home this season, obviously a very difficult result in the last game, so we knew we needed to bounce back and that’s what we spoke about before the game.
“I thought we showed good character to come back after [being] 1-0 down first half, so it was about reacting in the changing room second half, and I thought we did that really well. We came out [in the second half] and we were at it.”
Mason Mount is expected to feature more heavily now that Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha are injured while Bryan Mbeumo and Amad are also set to depart for AFCON next month.
