Only Manchester City have scored more goals in the Premier League this season than Manchester United

Ruben Amorim has managed to turn the Red Devils into a free-flowing attacking side after spending north of £200m to bring in new forwards.

However, the recent 4-4 draw with Bournemouth at Old Trafford also exposed several gaps in the Portuguese tactician’s system.

Manchester United planning major clear-out

According to CaughtOffside, Amorim has “made it clear” behind the scenes that he is determined to “build a squad tailored specifically to his tactical vision.”

As such, the upcoming winter transfer window is “expected to be a defining moment in that transformation.” It is understood United are preparing for a clear-out in January, with five senior stars facing uncertain futures.

The most surprising name on the list is Mason Mount, who joined United from Chelsea in 2023 for £55m, plus £5m in add-ons.

Mason Mount could leave Man United

Amorim has publicly praised Mount for his ability to both attack and defend from midfield. The Englishman has also earned plaudits for his work ethic.

The report, however, claims Amorim does not see Mount as a natural fit for either the attacking number-eight role or the inverted wide positions in his 3-4-3 system.

Mount lacks positional discipline and passing range to play ahead of the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in deeper roles.

Meanwhile, higher up the field, he faces competition from Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Amad Diallo. All three stars are more direct and decisive in the final third than the ex-Chelsea man.

The number seven has just seven goals and two assists to his name in 60 appearances for United. Further, the 26-year-old regularly struggles with injuries.

It is added that United are also open to parting ways with Manuel Ugarte, Altay Bayindir, Tyrell Malacia and Joshua Zirkzee mid-season.
