Mike Maignan will not be joining Chelsea this summer after AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri confirmed the France international will remain with the Rossoneri next season. Chelsea came close to landing the former Lille goalkeeper in June, holding advanced talks with Milan over a potential transfer. However, the deal collapsed on deadline day after the two clubs failed to reach an agreement on a fee.
The two clubs suffered from a major disparity in valuation for Maignan, and hence, the deal fell through. Milan believed he was worth €30m, whereas Chelsea were only willing to pay €10m.Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Allegri – who returned to the Milan dugout in May – firmly ruled out a future exit. “Maignan remains the captain and is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. I am very happy he decided to stay,” said the Italian tactician as transcribed by L’Équipe. With just one year left on his current contract, Maignan’s situation had drawn increasing speculation, particularly as Chelsea prepare to enter the new season with Robert Sánchez, Filip Jørgensen and Mike Penders as their senior goalkeeping options. Reports in England had even suggested Chelsea could revisit the deal after the Club World Cup – but Allegri appears to have shut that door.It is understood the Milan coach personally intervened to keep hold of the 29-year-old, holding what Italian press have described as “crisis talks” in an attempt to convince Maignan to commit to the club.GFFN | George Boxall
