Eddie Howe's side make the long trip to East Anglia for their first Premier League encounter at Portman Road since December 2001 and this will be the first time Attwell has officiated a fixture involving the Magpies this term.
The Nuneaton-born official, promoted to the Select Group Referees list in 2016, was the man in the middle for three of United's Premier League matches last season, overseeing a 3-1 away defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion which saw the 42-year-old hand out eight yellow cards that evening at the Amex Stadium, booking Dan Burn, Fabian Schär, Matt Targett and Anthony Gordon.
Attwell, the youngest referee in Premier League history following his debut in August 2008, was in charge of Newcastle's 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield United, booking no United players during an emphatic victory at Bramall Lane.
The Warwickshire whistler also oversaw Newcastle's narrow 1-0 win against Arsenal in November 2023 and booked six players at St. James' Park, including Tino Livramento, Schär, Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimarães and Gordon.
