Last weekend, Manchester United’s links to Mateus Fernandes surfaced in full force.

A report relayed by The Peoples Person suggested that Bruno Fernandes had recommended the West Ham United star to Old Trafford. The United captain apparently views his Portugal teammate as his ideal heir at M16.

The 21‑year‑old has been nothing short of revolutionary for the Hammers, stepping up as their creative outlet and ensuring they have not missed Lucas Paquetá, who returned home to Brazil. With immense potential, he continues to underline his growing influence.

Why United are calm about Mateus Fernandes

A damning report recently revealed that it is Liverpool, not United, who have opened talks with Fernandes’ camp over a £55 million summer move.

As those claims filtered through to the Old Trafford faithful, the question became obvious: why are INEOS not pressing harder to convince such an exciting midfielder to make the switch?

Sacha Tavolieri, via Sky Sports.ch, explained:

“Despite this internal recommendation (by Bruno Fernandes), the 21‑year‑old is not an immediate priority for the club. Competition is expected to be fierce, particularly from Manchester City, where sporting director Hugo Viana is a big admirer of his profile.”

Fernandes not a priority

From Tavolieri’s claims, it is clear Fernandes is not a transfer priority.

So why would United embroil themselves in a fierce bidding war? At best, such a battle would distract them from pursuing their top summer targets.

Reports suggest United could look to make two major midfield signings, with Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali emerging as prime candidates.

Given the duo’s established pedigree compared with Fernandes’ raw potential, it is easy to see why INEOS may choose to pass up the chance of signing the Hammer.

It may be a difficult transfer call, yet one that makes perfect sense with United in need of instant level‑raisers.
