Mateus Fernandes has been one of the Premier League’s most exciting emerging midfielders.
The Portuguese international’s brilliance at the London Stadium has thoroughly justified West Ham United agreeing a £42 million deal to sign him from Southampton last summer.
Had he been relegated with the Saints, the Premier League could have been denied a special talent.
Stepping up and filling Lucas Paquetá’s shoes, Fernandes has been instrumental in everything happening in the Hammers’ engine room. If West Ham battle to safety, Fernandes would certainly be one of their heroes.
It is, therefore, little wonder that Roy Keane thinks he has been better than the Premier League’s finest midfielders.
On the Overlap, playing the winner stays on of current Premier League midfielders, Keane backed the Hammer against other top midfielders:
Mateus Fernandes or Alex Scott? Roy Keane: “I’ll go with Fernandes.”
Fernandes or Belaba? Roy Keane: “Fernandes.”
Fernandes or Casemiro? Roy Keane: “Casemiro’s come towards the end. Fernandes.”
Fernandes or Gravenberch? Roy Keane: “Fernandes.”
Fernandes or Enzo Fernandez? Roy Keane: “Fernandes.”
Clearly, the former Sir Alex Ferguson-era skipper at Manchester United rates Fernandes highly.
Interestingly, he vouches for the Hammer not long after it was claimed that Bruno Fernandes would love to see the midfielder join him at Old Trafford. Apparently,
Bruno believes the young midfielder is the perfect heir to his throne at The Theatre of Dreams.
Whether Ineos turn their long-standing interest in Fernandes into a concrete bid remains to be seen.
What is clear, however, is that Keane and Bruno have both given the club every reason to push ahead with this £55 million transfer.
