Matheus Pereira has reflected on West Brom's promotion to the Premier League during his time at the club.
Matheus Pereira has reflected on West Brom’s promotion to the Premier League when he was at the club, which he described as ‘unforgettable’.
The Brazilian only spent two years at The Hawthorns, but he made himself a modern-day favourite after his performances in blue-and-white stripes.
Pereira was hugely influential as part of Slaven Bilic’s side that won promotion to the top-flight in 2020, and he was one of the few to emerge with credit as the Baggies were relegated the following season.
The left-footer joined Albion from Sporting CP, and he didn’t take long to adapt to English football, as he quickly showed his quality in the second tier.
In total, Pereira scored eight goals and registered 20 assists during his first season with West Brom, with Bilic’s men securing the second automatic promotion spot.
Their promotion was officially confirmed five years ago yesterday, with Albion sending out a message to mark the day, which included a picture of Pereira.
And, taking to Instagram, the Cruzeiro man stated that the season was ‘unforgettable’, as he also added a blue love heart emoji, with Pereira seemingly still keeping an eye out on his former club.
The classy attacking midfielder found the net 11 times in the Premier League, as well as providing six assists, and he would depart Albion following their relegation, as he signed for Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
He then had a short spell in the UAE with Al-Wehda before joining current club Cruzeiro, with Pereira having impressed this season in helping the side to the top of the table after 15 games.
Most Albion fans will still have a soft spot for Pereira, as he was a quality, technical player who gave them some big moments during his two years at the club.
Now, the challenge for the club is to build another team that can win promotion, and Ryan Mason would love to have a player like Pereira in his ranks.
Whilst they may not have someone with such individual quality, the new boss will feel he has enough talent at his disposal to mount a push for the play-offs, although he will hope to add to the squad ahead of the transfer deadline as the group does look weak in certain areas.
