Matias Soulé has delivered a seven-word update on his Roma future as Premier League links, including Sunderland, intensify. The 23-year-old’s remarks added to talk of a possible summer move.
He returned to Italy for pre-season and, asked at the airport if he would remain, said, “Will I stay? Honestly, I don’t know.” He added he had just arrived. According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland are exploring a move under Régis Le Bris.
There had been suggestions of only a tentative enquiry, but the picture now appears to have shifted. Agent Martin Guastadisegno is understood to have travelled to England for meetings with Sunderland and Fulham.
Roma are thought to value the former Juventus winger at about €35 million, around £30 million. His remaining book value is roughly €15.5 million, so a sale at that level would deliver a profit.
An approach from Sunderland would reportedly be seriously considered by Soulé, who is attracted by the chance to play in the Premier League. Sunderland can also offer Europa League football after finishing seventh last season, though Fulham and others could compete.
Soulé joined Roma from Juventus two summers ago for an initial €26 million, around £22 million, after they beat Leicester City to his signature. He made 41 appearances last season, with seven goals and eight assists, as Roma returned to the Champions League. Sunderland transfer chief Florent Ghisolfi previously helped bring him to Roma.
